Figs Are Freaking Awesome, And Here Are 6 Reasons Why

Have you tried fresh figs? I'm not sure if I prefer them dried or fresh, depends on my mood. Figs are in season (fresh) during summer months (June and then August through October) [1]. Of course eating foods in season is important for a multiple reasons. It's more cost effective, it supports local farmers, and it ensures you get a variety of important nutrients in your diet year round (prevents you from eating the same things all the time, which can lead to nutrient deficiency and even food sensitivities), seasonal foods are healthier/have better nutrient profiles, and they actually taste better because they fully ripen as they should [2]. Figs are freaking awesome. Here are 6 reasons why figs rock.

They contain fiber, minerals, vitamins, and antioxidant nutrients.

Dried figs are higher in nutrients (more concentrated) compared to fresh ones. Because dried figs are more concentrated however, they also contain more sugar.

Fresh ones, especially black mission figs, contain polyphenolic flavonoid antioxidants including carotenes, lutein, and tannins. They also contain vitamin antioxidants including A and E.

Figs are a decent source of vitamin K, important for blood clotting.

Fresh and dried figs also contain B complex vitamins, which are important for metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, therefore they participate in energy production.

Dried figs are high in content of a variety of minerals including calcium (bone health and muscle contraction), copper and iron (red blood cell production), potassium (regulation of blood pressure and heart rate), manganese and selenium (cofactors for antioxidant enzymes), and zinc (immune function, growth and development, testosterone production).

Wondering how this information applies to you? Food is medicine. If you have unidentified health conditions, or even identified ones that are not getting better, it may have to do with your digestive and metabolic function. That's because nutrient deficiencies can lead to serious health condition. As you can see, it takes a variety of nutrients to make all of the processes in your body work the way they are supposed to. Without those nutrients things can go awry. Think you might be experiencing these sorts of problems? Contact me and I can help you determine what's going on!
