My name is Jennifer Brand and I am a functional and clinical nutritionist. I have a Bachelors Degree in Nutrition and Dietetics, a Masters Degree in Public Health, a Masters Degree in Human Nutrition, and I am a Certified Nutrition Specialist. Nutrition is my passion, and I love helping people. As a functional and clinical nutritionist, I'll give you the personal and individualized attention you need to optimize your health.
Your body is built to heal itself once we remove obstacles preventing it from doing so. The symptoms you experience and the conditions you have, whatever they may be, represent your body's cries for help. They are signals that something is triggering adverse reactions within. Together, we can identify these obstacles and eliminate them, to give your body a chance to heal. This also means that you can in fact have control over your health status.
To appropriately address your health needs, we need to take into account YOUR biochemistry, and uncover the root cause of imbalances that may be contributing to the conditions you have. This is the functional medicine approach. All of the systems in your body are connected. When one is not functioning optimally and the root cause is left to persist, it can adversely affect other systems, creating a domino effect of illness and disease. Medications mask symptoms, leaving us unaware of the continued damage that is occurring within. Functional nutrition is the core of functional medicine and can help you reach optimal health with natural means, whether you have chronic, complex health problems, or want to improve your health and wellness.
You've changed your diet and nothing seems to work? We aren't just what we eat. We are what our bodies can do with what we eat. Rather than only making sure you are eating right, we need to make sure your body can digest, absorb and use nutrients from the foods you eat. Your diet may be stellar, but if your body can't use those nutrients, your perfect diet doesn't matter much, and won't help you feel better.
All your labs are normal, and you still feel awful? Often, conventional lab results appear normal, yet we still don't feel well. This is because conventional labs are based on a range, which is an average of the general population. The general population is far from healthy! As well, conventional testing doesn't identify insufficiency, rather it looks for deficiency. We can have subclinical insufficiencies causing our symptoms, and they will go unnoticed. These are reasons why you may not feel well, and still have lab results that are in range.
So, while labs may appear normal for conventional medical practice, they can be far from optimal and therefore underlying dysfunction can be causing your symptoms. Functional testing can help assess what conventional testing cannot and help us understand what optimal should look like for you. Therefore functional testing can guide us in creating a plan truly based on your unique biochemistry.
What about lifestyle? Exercise, getting enough sleep, and stress management are examples of lifestyle factors that play a major role in your overall health, and many of us struggle with them. We will work together to find strategies to include these important factors into your overall plan.
Why supplements? Nutrient supplementation can be a key factor for improving overall metabolic function, and therefore it can positively impact the issues you are experiencing. Often, due to long standing deficiency and imbalances, the addition of supplemental nutrients can help restore metabolic processes to their optimal state.
